We often talk about heritage - what we build, what we leave behind. But have you ever thought about the heritage we carry within us, going back generations?

That's where epigenetic inheritance comes in. Epigenetics is the study of how our environment, experiences and even trauma can change the expression of our genes, without changing the underlying DNA sequence. These changes can be passed on to future generations, meaning that the stresses, struggles or resilience of our ancestors can influence our behaviour today.

What does this mean for you?

1. Healing the past: Understanding epigenetic inheritance invites us to look at our own behaviours, reactions and stressors in a new light. I realise that I still carry unhealed traumas from previous generations. The need to be well perceived by others thanks to financial wealth, for example. By making peace with this, I create a healthier and more resilient environment for myself, my family, my employees, my customers and all my stakeholders.

2. Conscious leadership: Leaders who are aware of the impact of legacy trauma are more empathetic and responsive. I don't just ‘manage’ others; I do my best to nurture everyone and foster a culture of wellbeing, truth and vulnerability. My intention is to break the cycles of stress and dysfunction and give everyone the means to flourish. It's not always easy, especially with those closest to me who suffer the same traumas as I do. But it's precisely in these relationships that the gifts are to be found!

3. A new kind of heritage: The decisions I make today, both personally and professionally, can reshape my epigenetic heritage. By prioritising calm, abundance and awareness, I'm paving the way for a healthier future, not just for me, but for generations to come.

It's not just about navigating the present; it's about understanding and healing the past to build a better future. As family and business leaders, we have a unique opportunity - and a fundamental responsibility - to be aware of the legacy we carry, to transform inherited challenges into generational strengths.
