Culture eats strategy for breakfast

In the journey to drive real change within an organization, the heart of transformation lies in storytelling. It’s not just about a strategy; it’s about cultivating a culture that embraces, lives, and breathes that strategy.

A compelling story in the context of cultural transformation is one that emotionally resonates and provides a clear, authentic vision of the desired culture. It should invite employees to see themselves as integral characters in the story, helping them feel connected to the organization’s values and mission. To be compelling, a story must go beyond words; it should embody the spirit of the change leaders want to see, presenting challenges, choices, and growth that employees can identify with and aspire to emulate.

Here’s how leaders can craft compelling stories that leverage employees' own experiences:

1. Identify Core Values and Examples

Begin by defining the core values you wish to foster, such as collaboration, innovation, or resilience. Then, look for real examples within the team that reflect these values in action. For instance, an employee who went above and beyond to support a client under challenging circumstances may highlight dedication and customer-centricity.

2. Encourage Employees to Share Their Stories

Host sessions where employees are encouraged to share their own experiences that resonate with the organization’s mission and values. These stories become the foundation for the cultural narrative, showing that the desired culture already exists within the team.

3. Highlight the Heroes in Everyday Situations

In MAT’s approach, a leader’s story is most compelling when it speaks from personal experience and acknowledges the role of employees as “everyday heroes.” These aren’t tales of grand gestures but rather stories of resilience, integrity, and commitment to each other and the organization’s values. By recognizing and celebrating these moments, employees see themselves as active contributors to the culture.

4. Create a Shared Vision of Success

Use the collected stories to paint a vivid picture of what the organization looks like when everyone embodies the culture. For example, share a story of an employee who demonstrated collaboration, then tie it back to how collaboration can drive innovation and shared success.

5. Encourage a Story Cascade

As MAT’s philosophy emphasizes, transformation is about creating stories that inspire others to create their own. Encourage employees to share stories of their peers’ actions that align with the cultural values. This builds a positive feedback loop, making cultural behaviors visible and encouraging more employees to align with them.

By integrating employees' stories, leaders create a narrative that is relatable, meaningful, and grounded in reality—one that helps bridge the gap between abstract values and everyday behaviors, allowing the culture to grow authentically from within.
