All too often, meetings become a way of diluting responsibilities. They invite you along without really explaining why... Well, yes: you know that if something goes wrong, you'll be told, "But you knew about it!
Yet meetings, whether they're held in a formal room or in a more informal setting, offer a unique opportunity: to strengthen links, stimulate creativity and move forward together towards a common goal.

Drawing inspiration from Priya Parker's book The Art of Gathering, here are eight concrete principles from my personal experience that will make your meetings more engaging and impactful:

  1. Define clear objectives for each participant: Everyone needs to know why they are there and what is expected of them.
  2. Invite only those with the power to decide: Fewer spectators, more key players.
  3. Create a framework of psychological safety: Establish rules such as non-judgement, confidentiality, welcoming disagreement and the importance of not taking everything personally.
  4. Start with a moment of silence: A pause to refocus and open up space for reflection.
  5. Encourage authenticity and deep connections: Encourage sincere and human exchanges.
  6. Don't shy away from sensitive subjects: A good host tackles the unspoken with courage to unblock the real issues.
  7. Avoid long, pointless debates and excessive bureaucracy: Preserve spontaneity and clarity.
  8. Conclude with a round-table discussion on the commitments made: this helps to clarify the next steps and to make everyone accountable.

With these principles, you can transform your meetings into constructive and meaningful opportunities for exchange. Say goodbye to time-consuming meetings and hello to meetings that really move things forward!
