During a recent group coaching session, I was surprised that several participants felt guilty. Yet these individuals are on a conscious journey to become their best version. They are responsible in their community, run a business or have a family. Moreover, they have taken numerous personal development workshops, practised meditation and applied various processes to free themselves from childhood traumas.

But what is guilt?

Like all emotions, guilt is the expression of tension between a present experience and a memory from the past. It is subtle and plays a crucial role in helping us to re-establish a semblance of security in our relationship with ourselves when we feel responsible. It arises when we feel we have violated a moral standard or personal code of ethics, implying a sense of remorse for causing harm or failing to prevent it.

Guilt and the raising of consciousness

Feeling guilty is a normal reaction when we raise our consciousness. The more we learn to respect ourselves, the more we realise that we have not always done so in the past. Although motivated by good intentions, our actions have not always generated the serenity and happiness we hoped for. This is a valuable opportunity to learn from our mistakes.

The pitfalls of guilt

Unfortunately, when our ego takes over, this revelation can lead to a negative perception of ourselves. Guilt can then be exploited by narcissistic manipulators to weaken us by pointing out our faults or our failure to respect social norms. Taking advantage of this emotional ascendancy, they can lead us into a vicious circle of excuses, excessive responsibility for things we have no control over, self-punishment or blaming other social groups for our suffering.

The role of the conscious leader

As a conscious leader, it is vital to understand this complex emotion. Encouraging those who feel guilty to pause and observe the lessons they are learning is essential. By rewarding them for their awareness, we help them continue on their awakening path.

Conclusion

When recognised and appropriately managed, guilt can become a powerful ally in our quest for awareness and leadership. It reminds us that every mistake is an opportunity to learn and grow. As leaders, we must accompany those around us in this transformation, offering them support and encouragement on their journey towards a higher consciousness.
