Boundaries structure our existence, like guard rails, and help us to preserve our personal integrity, our values and our goals. They serve to delimit what is and is not acceptable in our interactions and environments.

They promote:

1. Self-respect: respecting ourselves 100% by defining what fulfils us and what hurts us.

2. Respect for relationships: understanding that setting clear limits can also protect relationships by avoiding misunderstandings and abuse .

The ambivalence of limits

However, they can also become a source of rigidity if they are misunderstood or misapplied. Conflicts, often linked to differences in boundaries or their absence, reveal this ambivalence. In such cases, transforming conflict into opportunity becomes possible through a conscious approach:

- Observe with empathy: understand the underlying needs of both parties.

- Decide with discernment: choose a solution that is in line with our values, while being open to collaboration .

The art of navigating between flexibility and firmness

Whether in the office or at home, boundaries need to evolve with the context. Here are a few practical tips:

1. Pause for a moment: before imposing a limit, reflect on its relevance by observing your own emotions and motivations.

2. Communicate clearly: express your limits in a positive way, without imposing them, but explaining their role in maintaining the relationship .

3. Accept uncertainty: recognise that certain limits may be temporarily crossed to promote growth or resolve a conflict .
