How important is awareness in managing difficult situations? I propose a 6-step approach called PODnow®, which encourages everyone to pause, observe, decide, respect themselves, respect relationships and expect nothing in return.

Here are the key points of this approach:

  • PAUSE: When faced with a difficult situation, it is essential to take a step back and breathe before reacting. This helps to calm the sympathetic nervous system and avoid impulsive reactions dictated by the ego. Conscious breathing is a powerful tool for returning to a state of calm and lucidity.
  • Observe without judgement (OBSERVE): After the pause, observe the situation objectively, without judgement or hasty interpretation. The aim is to identify the emotions, thoughts and behaviours that are influencing the situation. The body is a precious measuring instrument, capable of signalling emotional imbalances and guiding us towards more conscious choices.
  • Decide in accordance with your ‘true north’ (DECIDE): The decision must be taken in accordance with your deepest values and your goal, which I call your ‘true north’. It's not about blindly following external rules or expectations, but about aligning yourself with what's truly important to you.
  • Respect yourself first (100): Self-respect is essential in managing difficult situations. It's about setting limits, asserting yourself and making choices that honour your needs and well-being. Respecting yourself helps you to stay anchored in your values and avoid letting negative emotions get the better of you.
  • Respect the relationship (x100): Respecting the relationship involves recognising the other person as an individual responsible for their own happiness. It's about listening carefully, showing empathy and co-creating solutions that take everyone's needs into account. Respecting the relationship does not mean accepting unacceptable behaviour, but dealing with it conscientiously and firmly.
  • Expecting nothing in return (+0): Acting without expecting reward or recognition frees you from attachment to results and keeps you focused on your intention. This detachment allows you to approach difficult situations with greater serenity and clarity.
