I'm touched by those sportsmen and women who touch the ground with their hands and make the sign of the cross, looking out at the universe, before entering the field. I see it as an act of respect and humility.

In many so-called traditional cultures, lowering the gaze is a courteous and benevolent gesture, indicating that the hierarchical rules in place are accepted. The elder, the leader or the male is thus confirmed in his superiority.

The quest for freedom and equality undermines this order. The young, the workers who put their hands to the service of Mother Earth or the animal kingdom, the experienced sages, the awakened dreamers, all challenge this artificial dominance that allows the privileged to maintain their old advantages while remaining protected in their ivory towers.
